Felsted School offers an outstanding all-round boarding school education in a warm and welcoming environment. From the moment Doris and I drove onto the beautiful, historic campus, there was a very strong sense of community, amongst both students and staff, creating an ambitious, supportive and inclusive atmosphere, where all pupils thrive. Founded on the same day as Shakespeare was born, Felsted has a fabulous mix of British tradition and innovation.

Via the links below, you can watch our video interviews with key people at Felsted who have shared their thoughts with us on lots of important aspects of the school.
Outstanding Leadership & Inclusivity
Headmaster Chris Townsend is a passionate and dedicated leader who values every child as an individual. His genuine commitment to student wellbeing and academic success is evident, and his embrace of neurodiversity ensures that all pupils are supported in reaching their full potential. We enjoyed meeting his beautiful dog, Scout, though she wasn’t too keen on meeting Doris the Defender.

Exceptional Student Monitoring & Mentoring
One of the most impressive aspects of Felsted is the school’s robust system of monitoring and assessment. Every child is closely supported to ensure they are happy, challenged, nurtured, and making strong progress in their academic subjects. Teachers and pastoral staff work together to provide individualised guidance, ensuring that no student is overlooked, and that each child can thrive both academically and personally.
Sixth Form Excellence
Felsted offers a highly flexible and impressive Sixth Form programme, with students able to choose from A Levels, the IB Diploma, or two BTECs in business and sport. The school’s modern Sixth Form Centre is a fantastic space for study, discussion, and socialising, complete with dedicated study zones, collaborative thinking areas, and even a bar where students can unwind in a mature and responsible setting. It’s the first time I have seen treadmill desks in a school study space – what a great idea and perhaps reflects the character of a Felsted pupil.

Sporting Success
Felsted has a proud sporting tradition, with outstanding facilities and expert coaching, including a focus on strength and conditioning, across a wide variety of sports for both boys and girls. The school provides opportunities for all levels, from those playing for fun to students excelling at representative and even international levels. Recent success in national competitions has truly put Felsted sport on the map.
Music, Creative & Performing Arts
Music, drama, and the creative arts thrive at Felsted, with exceptional opportunities for students to perform, create, and showcase their talents. Whether it’s on stage, in the art studio, or within the school’s vibrant music programme, students are encouraged to explore their creativity to the fullest.
Boarding & Community
The school’s boarding houses feel like a true home-from-home, with a nurturing environment that encourages independence and lifelong friendships. A mix of international and British families, including many London-based parents who take advantage of the excellent commuter links, adds to the school’s rich and diverse culture. Saturday morning school and a packed sporting fixture list at weekends, maintains the busy 7-day a week ethos of a boarding school. Weekends for those who board full time involve minibus trips to local amenities, as well as some well-earned rest, after a busy week. With London on the doorstep, getting to and from Felsted by train, car or plane is easy.
Prep School: Skills for Life
Felsted’s Prep School goes beyond academics, placing a strong emphasis on developing essential life skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and teamwork. Pupils are encouraged to explore and grow in a stimulating and supportive setting, preparing them for success in senior school and beyond. With the benefit of being able to focus on a quality education, and children not growing up too soon, the prep school’s automatic progression into the senior school means parents can relax, without feeling the pressure of navigating senior school pre-tests or Common Entrance.

A Fantastic Summer School Experience
Felsted also runs a well-established summer school that welcomes over 500 children each year. The programme offers academic courses in English and Global Citizenship, alongside a wide range of sports, clubs, and activities. It’s a fantastic opportunity for children to experience boarding school life - whether they are considering it for the future or simply looking for an exciting summer adventure. With students from all over the world, it’s a wonderful way to build friendships, learn new skills, and make lifelong memories during the long summer break.
