British boarding schools occupy a highly regarded place in the world's educational landscape. They combine centuries of academic tradition with a high level of pastoral care, exceptional intellectual rigour and breadth of opportunity that draws families from every continent who are keen to inspire and nurture their child’s talents and ambitions. For UK families, a boarding education has long been a considered choice for the right child. For British expat families overseas, it is sometimes a pathway to British university or a natural route home for the whole family via relocation. For internationally based families, it’s an investment in their child's future via opportunities to nurture talent and build a network of friends for life.
Strategy and planning for applications, particularly to UK elite boarding schools often begins two or three years before the first day of term.
The British system offers three principal boarding models. Full boarding, in which pupils live at school throughout term-time and return home for exeats and holidays, is the dominant model at the most academically selective senior schools. Weekly boarding allows pupils the choice to return home at weekends and offers a hybrid blend of school community and family time, especially valued by UK families who live within reasonable distance of the school. Flexi-boarding gives families the option of boarding for one or two nights each week and is often a useful entry route for younger children who are new to the boarding experience. As part of our strategic planning with private client families, we advise on all three boarding options, often answering the question of which model genuinely suits a particular child and family at a particular stage. Often facilitating conversations with parents who are not necessarily on the same page about boarding, we ensure the whole family is happy with the school choices they make with the child at the centre of the decision.
Choosing a British boarding school is not, however, principally a question of asking yourself whether full-boarding, weekly-boarding or flexi-boarding is for you, or even which school is best for your child and family. It’s mostly a question of which boarding school environment is the best fit to inspire your child’s future happiness and success. The most academically selective, elite boarding schools suit children who thrive on challenge, competition and a fast pace. Equally, there are many fantastic UK boarding schools suited to children whose strengths lie equally in academic work, sporting talents or music and the creative arts. Specialist boarding schools deliver outstanding outcomes for children with talents outside the academic, for example those with focused talents in sports, via sporting academies with exceptional mentoring and coaching programmes. Smaller boarding schools are also worth considering where nurture and building confidence is the foundation for a child’s future success.

Approximately two thirds of our private clients are based outside the UK. Without a British prep school to advocate for your child, the boarding school admissions journey for international and expat families often has its own timeline. Our work with these private client families reflects the practical realities they face such as time zones, distance from airports or UK-based family and friends. Alongside this, unfamiliarity and the complexity of the British admissions timeline calendar, as well as the challenge of preparing for British school pre-tests and entry assessments from within another educational system, often means families are confused and anxious when they come to us asking for help.
ISEB Common Pre-Test invigilation for families overseas
The ISEB Common Pre-Test is used by most of the UK's leading senior boarding schools as part of their 11+ and 13+ admissions process. The test must be administered either by a UK prep school, a registered international school or a registered third-party educational company. Since most international schools, particularly those outside the British curriculum, are not themselves ISEB-registered, we are registered as a UK-based invigilation provider, so we can support our private client families with taking the test in a friendly, stress-free environment, whilst they are visiting the UK, during the test windows set by the UK boarding senior schools.
As registered ISEB Common Pre-Test invigilators, we administer the test for the children of internationally based private client families, removing what is often a barrier to British boarding entry. We also coordinate the test registration process via the ISEB portal, helping our client families to manage their applications to each of their target senior schools. We also ensure the child feels confident and familiar with the test, ahead of test day.
Coordinating school visits across continents
For overseas families, visits to British boarding schools are typically condensed into a single week or fortnight in the UK, often during half-term or in the summer. We coordinate the visit schedule, secure private visits where appropriate, brief the family on what to look for at each school, and ensure the schools know all about your child and family, so they are well prepared to welcome you for your visit. For families unable to travel in time, we also support remote engagement with schools through video calls and detailed briefings.
Working across time zones
We work routinely with families in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, communicating by video call, WhatsApp and email at times that work for each family's location. Our team operates in a way that respects time differences while ensuring continuity through what is often a multi-year application journey.

when to begin preparing
Families considering elite British boarding school entry typically benefit from beginning preparation between eighteen months and four years before the intended date of entry. The exact timeline depends on the entry point, the schools targeted, and the child's current educational system and school. Below is the typical journey for the most selective 13+ entry, which is the longest preparation cycle. Shorter timelines apply to 11+ and Sixth Form entry, as well as late application routes, and we regularly support families with shorter-notice or last-minute applications.

11+ entry
For 11+ entry, we typically recommend beginning preparation eighteen months to two years in advance. The structure follows a similar pattern, condensed into a shorter window.
Sixth Form entry
For Sixth Form entry, families typically engage us twelve to eighteen months before entry. Assessments take place in the Autumn Term of Year 11, usually including an online test, plus the schools own tests in the subjects the pupil intends to take at A Level or IB. Sixth Form. Interviews are typically rigorous and subject specific.
Last-minute and occasional places
We regularly support families whose circumstances mean they engage us closer to the point of entry, whether through unexpected relocation, a change in family circumstances, or a school decision being reconsidered. Late applications are entirely possible at many leading schools, particularly through occasional places that arise across the school year, and focused preparation in a shorter window remains highly effective.
