Educated at an independent boarding school between the ages of 11 and 18, following which I spent a gap year working for a medical packaging firm in Bristol. I studied undergraduate medicine at the University of Oxford from 1985 to 1991.

Following graduation, I undertook pre-registration house-jobs in medicine and surgery at York District Hospital. After full medical registration I commenced basic surgical training at High Wycombe with senior house officer posts in accident & emergency, orthopaedics and general surgery and finally six months anatomy demonstrating at Oxford University.

I then decided to jump the “blood-brain barrier” and switch from surgery to anaesthesia, primarily to leave the tedium of ward rounds and outpatient clinics and spend all day in the operating theatre. I undertook basic anaesthesia training at High Wycombe and the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, subsequently completing higher anaesthesia training on the Anglia rotation which included registrar posts at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, Peterborough hospitals & the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital.

On completion of training, I was appointed Consultant in anaesthesia by Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2001. I was the Royal College of Anaesthetists Tutor for anaesthesia at Peterborough between 2003 and 2008 and was elected a Royal College of Anaesthetists Primary FRCA Examiner in 2010. This involves at least two full weeks per year of examining trainee anaesthetists in physiology, pharmacology, physics & clinical measurement, and clinical anaesthesia. I have more recently diversified into medical management becoming Associate Clinical Director for Perioperative Care at Peterborough City Hospital in 2012.

I have extensive experience of medical recruitment including the selection of trainees for anaesthesia and maintain a busy clinical caseload with broad interests which include preoperative assessment and preparation of high risk patients for major surgery, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and anaesthesia for urology and major colorectal surgery. I am keen to support and encourage the next generation of doctors who have chosen an extremely demanding but rewarding career in the setting of a National Health Service which is undergoing the greatest degree of change since it was founded.
